ALBUM REVIEW

GENRE: ROCK

LABEL: VIRGIN/ABKCO/DECCA

RELEASED: 2002

Charismatic, enigmatic, flamboyant- just a few adjectives which spring to mind when referring to the self proclaimed ‘Greatest Rock and Roll Band of All Time’. With a career spanning an incredible five decades, the institute of British rock known as THE ROLLING STONES release FORTY LICKS; a two disc forty track album showcasing their impressive repertoire and unmistakable sound which redefined the rock genre.

Released just two short years after the phenomenally successful BEATLES: 1 album, FORTY LICKS really is the definitive STONES collection. From signature tracks such as Angie, Jumping Jack Flash and (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction to the previously unreleased Don’t Stop and Keys to Your Love, there really is no need to buy another STONES album. As with any band that has been around for so long, THE STONES have their fair share of filler material, but you’d be hard pushed to find it here. Perhaps the only track which falls into this category is Losing My Touch. Although it could be argued the single, which features KEITH RICHARDS on lead vocals, is more of an unexpected deviation from the usual STONES sound rather than something thrown in to make up the numbers.

The Greatest Rock and Roll Band of All Time? Possibly. What is for certain is that FORTY LICKS would prove a positive addition to any music collection. JG
