POACHE: OK, thank you Prime Minister, we should move on now to our next question.
JAMES: My wife and I lived in Sweden for four years and we had first hand experience of their measures against crime. In our time there,
don’t recall being the victim of any crime and always felt safe. Their TV news is not full of murders or robberies, like ours. In our first year back in England our house was broken into and the man who did it only got a suspended sentence. Surely there are lessons to be learnt from countries like Sweden. Why is the Prime Minister so dead against looking abroad for ideas on how to tackle crime?
GIBSON: Firstly as a victim of robbery myself, I fully understand and sympathise with your misfortune. Admittedly, Sweden’s approach to combating crime is clearly effective. However, Sweden is a very different country to Britain. The tactics they’ve adopted may not necessarily work over here. As a government, we’re always looking at new ways to reduce the level of crime and the introduction of Identity Cards and the Criminal Surveillance Database are evidence of this.
JONES: I’m sorry, but the simple dismissal of what is clearly an effective method of crime prevention goes to show just how poorly the government is dealing with this whole issue. Yes, Sweden is a different country, well done for noticing, but the figures speak for themselves. All reported crime in that country has reduced by 27% over the last year alone, a figure that can largely be attributed to the new DNA based technology introduced there. I fail to see how the Prime Minister thinks an approach like that wouldn’t work. Don’t British people have DNA too?
POACHE: OK, hang on Mr Jones, if you could stick to the point and just try to answer the question?
JONES: I’m sorry Ian, but I think it’s a valid point actually. I mean, why does the Prime Minister think that DNA based measures would be ineffective here? Look, in all seriousness, even if the fundamental approach is a little different from those already tried here, shouldn’t that be embraced? The initiatives spearheaded by the Prime Minister himself are clearly not working so what does he do about it? Does he spend any time or money studying the feasibility of instigating these internationally recognised methods? I’ll tell you how much time and money he spent on it. Zero. Not one study has been commissioned and no information or advice has been sought. The Innovation Party has spent years championing the methods of our European neighbours and has conducted extensive research into the feasibility of introducing some of those methods to the UK. They could work here, we know this, but this government continues to bury its head in the sand on the issue. I might also add that we have stated clearly in our manifesto that we will take a zero tolerance approach to all violent -
POACHE: - OK, I think we’re getting away from the question which concerned the use of crime prevention methods from abroad. Prime Minister, do you have anything to add?
