ALEX and BRET are sat centre stage. They are balanced on the centre of a large sewer pipe which runs overhead of a stream. The pipe is approximately ten metres from the ground and due to its age, looks damaged and weak. ALEX is sitting rigidly with his feet together obviously frightened. BRET is smoking a cigarette and seems oblivious to ALEX’s fear. He swings his feet carelessly making a loud hollow sound as his feet hit the pipe.
ALEX is hesitant, trying to find the courage to speak. BRET looks up holding his hand horizontally against his forehead, blocking out the over powering sunlight.
A single magpie flies by. BRET takes a drag on his cigarette.
BRET
Fucking amazing.
ALEX
(Nervous)
Huh?
BRET takes another drag from his cigarette, still focused on the magpie.
BRET
Flying. You know, being
able to get away from this shithole.
ALEX
Where would you go?
BRET
(Flicking cigarette into the stream)
Any where.
ALEX looks down as the cigarette drops into the water. He takes a gulp of air, gaining the attention of BRET.
(Laughing)
You’re scared.
ALEX ignores the remark.
BRET jolts forward causing ALEX to grip tighter to the pipe.
ALEX
(Scared)
Please... don’t.
BRET
(False confusion)
Don’t what?
ALEX
Don’t... don’t rock.
BRET wraps both of his hands around the pipe and rocks softly.
BRET
(Laughing)
Why’s that then? Do you think we might fall?
BRET takes a box of cigarettes out of his inside pocket. He takes one from the pack, puts it to his lips and lights it. He offers one to ALEX. ALEX shakes his head quickly.
ALEX
Shall we get...
BRET
Do you want a beer?
